GBN Yolanda "Shiphrah" Kadima BIRTH WORKER OF COLOR SCHOLARSHIP
Georgia Birth Network is pleased to announce the recipients of our second Yolanda "Shiphrah" Kadima Birth Worker of Color Scholarship. Congratulations to Brandie Bishop, Imani Byers, and Kathia LaGuerre. Funds will go respectively toward acupressure, mental health, Spinning Babies, and lactation certifications. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded two times a year. Applications are being accepted for our December scholarship. The deadline to submit is December 15, 2021 and applications can be found at our website under the Birth Professionals tab.
We are grateful to the family of Yolanda "Shiprah" Kadima for their blessing to dedicate the naming of the scholarship in her memory. Below you can read more about Shiphrah and understand the great honor it is as a membership organization to provide resources to applicants to carry on her legacy through birth work. A special thank you to the Kadima family for entrusting GBN with this privilege.
"Shiphrah", as she was known in her community, was a holistically focused and homeschooling mother of 7, who studied and worked in the maternal-child field since high school. She was an experienced and skilled lactation consultant and trained full circle doula who enjoyed all things associated with womb wellness, fertility, pregnancy, birth, the postpartum period, breastfeeding, and parenting. Her professional service and personable delivery left families beyond satisfied every time. She considered her work to be her purpose, passion, and spiritual ministry and was honored to serve all. She transitioned, in her prime, at the tender age of 35 from complications from a questionable cesarean section that delivered her second set of girl and boy twins. She sacrificed her life to bring forth two new lives.
In Loving Memory of
Yolanda "Shiphrah" Kadima
Due June 15, 2021 - Applicants will be notified of any awards by July 1, 2021
Maternal Mortality rates in Georgia are abysmal compared to the rest of the country, with African American women being 3-4 times more likely to die from a childbirth related complication than their white counterparts. Georgia Birth Network is striving to be part of the solution when it comes to reducing the disparity of access to birth workers of color compared to the abundance of white birth workers.
Georgia Birth Network is awarding up to $2,000, twice a year to any birth worker of color working toward certification in their field.
Examples of birth workers are doulas, childbirth educators, birth photographers, massage therapists, lactation
consultants, chiropractors, and midwives.
The scholarship is NOT limited to Georgia Birth Network members only. However, priority will be given to its
members. Awards will be based on need, urgency, and intention of use. Must be at least 18 years old to apply.
At this time, the scholarship is limited to Georgia residents.
